Summit Attempt #5 and "The Claw"

Carstensz Pyramid Itinerary

Day 1 Sept. 15: Arrive Jakarta Intn’l from Tapei – 21hrs 45min after leaving LAX. 11 pm same day fly to Timika, in Western Papua (formerly Irian Jaya)
Day 2 Sept. 16: Arrive Timika – bush plane flight to Sugapa.
Day 3 Sept. 17: Reserve day for bad weather.
Day 4–7 Sept. 18-21: Sugapa - Meet local Dani tribesmen, stop at their village to pick up food/supplies and begin trek to base camp. View this link for some great photos of the Dani people and the climb: http://www.mountaintrip.com/Carstensz_Pyramid.htm We are not going with Mountain Trip on this expedition, but instead have opted to use a local Indonesian guiding service – without an impressive website like Mountain Trip.
Day 8 Sept. 22: Arrive at base camp, apprx. 13,800 feet, situated by an azure blue/green glacial lake beneath the towering limestone rock face we will be scaling. Rest during afternoon and prepare gear for summit.
Day 9 Sept. 23: SUMMIT DAY – Wake up apprx. 2:00 am and begin climbing with headlamps and fixed lines up mostly steep and some near vertical sections. Reach summit ridge by sunrise and prepare to cross “the gap” via Tyrolean Traverse. Hanging by our climbing harness we pull ourselves across a 50 foot+ section of rope suspended above a 1,000 foot+ vertical drop below. If we are successsful through all of this, we will reach the 16,023 foot summit peak Puncak Jaya - the highest point on the continent of Oceania.
Day 10 Sept. 24: Extra day for summit attempt / weather contingency.
Day 11-14 Sept. 25-28: Trekking back from base camp to Sugapa
Day 15 Sept. 29: Arrival Sugapa, rest and wait for bush plane.
Day 16 Sept. 30: Fly to Timika – hotel – reserve flight to Bali
Day 17 Oct. 1: Fly to Bali – Transfer to Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay:

Day 18–20 Oct. 2-4: Relax at hotel, massage, explore temples of Bali, etc.
Day 20 Oct. 4: Fly to Labuan Bajo near islands of Komodo
Day 21-22 Oct. 5-6: Scuba dive trip in Komodo National Park viewing pristine corals, turtles, mantas, reef sharks, and scores of fish. Boat to stop at Rinca Island to get close up view of the famed Komodo Dragon, the largest living lizard up to 10 feet long and 154 lbs that feeds on goats, deer, and occasionally humans.
Day 23 Oct. 7: Transfer to Labuan Bajo airport and fly to Bali – overnight
Day 24 Oct. 8: Fly from Bali to Jakarta – overnight
Day 25 Oct. 9: Fly from Jakarta to Tapei to LAX – arrive 8 pm
